Nearly on the eve of our review of the 2012 Porsche 911, we learned of Ferdinand Alexander Porsche’s passing. While not our normal Gear Patrol fare, we thought it appropriate to make note of the man who designed an icon.

Today we wear our blackest racing suits to pay homage to the great Ferdinand Porsche, a man who needs no introduction in the automotive world. He passed on yesterday at the age of 76.

Mr. Porsche had petrol running througn his veins from a very young age, designing his own toy cars and having a grandfather who designed the original VW Beetle. Ferdinand went on to became the head of Porsche’s design section in 1962 and designed the rightful heir to the famed 356 that went on to rule the world as one of the most iconic cars of all time, the Porsche 911. The fact that he was able to see the seventh generation of the venerable rear engined automotive icon must have been deeply satisfying. No doubt, his legacy will live on for generations.
